Made by PaperPhine: Vintage Bobbin Christmas Tree

Made by PaperPhine: Bobbin_Tree_01

We’re getting into the right mood for the holidays – and thanks to Linda’s Mum we now even have a Christmas Tree made of some of our own >Vintage Bobbins! A combination of old silk bobbins wrapped with twine and yarns as well as some smaller Christmas tree ornaments make a beautiful, small tree (that can be stored away in a small box if we wanted to because the bobbins are only stacked and not glued together).

Made by PaperPhine: KNOT jewelry now with latches

KNOT Necklace by PaperPhine
KNOT can be worn as a necklace as well as a bracelet

We introduced out new KNOT jewelry line in August this year (here and here) and it has become a huge success. In fact we sold so many that our supplier ran out of the beautiful, matte latches we used to add even more options in the style you can wear the necklace/bracelet. But now the latches are back in stock and because they were made especially for us in Germany we now do have a lot of them in the studio!

PaperPhine KNOT Bracelet - Made of Paper Twine

If you’re looking for a Christmas present for one of your loved ones (or for yourself) then this versatile piece might be what you’ve been looking for. KNOT jewelry is made of paper twine and it can get wet though to keep the pieces in pristine condition we recommend to take them off before washing the dishes or going for a romantic walk in the rain! All pieces are packed in clear gift-boxes and if you need them wrapped as gift just drop us a line and we’ll whip up a fantastic, papery gift for you. Buy it online in our etsy shop.

KNOT jewelry made by PaperPhine - Hand-made - Paper Twine

Also we’ve been working with our Nordic agent Stjernestunder and there are now a lot of shops in Denmark and Norway that are selling our KNOTs – you can find a complete list of our stockists here (please note that not all PaperPhine retailers have the KNOTs).

A peek into the PaperPhine studio

PaperPhine: Paper Twines

Besides preparations for upcoming craft fairs and Christmas we’re busy with the design of our new online store. It will be slightly bigger, easier to navigate and with more pictures to show you our paper twines, bobbins and odds and ends. One of the tasks that have to be completed is a re-shooting of a lot of our products. The investment in good daylight photo lamps already pays off because the days here in Vienna get shorter and shorter and light is not always as abundant.

Crepe Paper

One of the pictures for the new shop that shows a whole range of available colors – yes, we know that it won’t become easier to choose colors in the future because you’ll likely want them all… sorry for that. The other picture shows a kraft colored crepe paper streamer/ribbon we’re currently playing around with (whenever we find a spare minute at least). It’s great for gift wrapping, flower-making and all kinds of decorations and it will be available in the new store!

Our new postcards!

PaperPhine's New Paper Twine Postcards

Our new postcards arrived! We seriously underestimated the weight of a parcel filled with postcards but luckily our mailman was so nice to carry the parcel right into the studio and put it into the designated spot in the shelf – thanks again! The postcard shows all of your strong paper twines – 19 colors in total – and we’ll start sending them out with all the orders.

A Knitted Paper Twine Tote Bag (sneak peek)

Made by PaperPhine: a Paper Twine Tote Bag

As promised in the last PaperPhine newsletter we’re busily putting the finishing touches onto the Paper Twine Tote Bag tutorial. A great knitting project and an even greater tote bag (prepare to defend it because people will definitely try to convince you to hand it over to them as a present). Just give us a couple more days and all details will be worked out!

You don’t get our newsletter yet? Have a look at the right hand side and you’ll find a sign-up link. And don’t worry – we’re far too busy to send more than one newsletter every couple of months but we do our best to fill it with the best and most worthwhile information every time!

Yvette Hawkins: A young artist working with folded books

Yvette Hawkins: All The Books I Have Never Finished
Yvette Hawkins: All The Books I Have Never Finished
Yvette Hawkins: embroidered book sculpture made especially for the exhibition “All The Books I Have Never Finished” at The Gallery of Wonder, Newcastle University, UK.

The book sculpture above is the piece that made me curious about Yvette Hawkins’ work. Yvette received her BA in Fine Art from Newcastle University in 2007 and ever since she has not only sold some of her smaller, more accessible and affordable book sculptures under the label Paperfaerie (with her shop here) but has also created huge art installations using hundreds of folded books. As Yvette explains herself “With Paperfaerie, I felt I wanted the work to move more towards affordable functional items for the home and workspace, whereas the installations are more about exploring spaces and peoples relationships between communication and physical spaces.”

Yvette Hawkins

This embroidered book sculpture shown above consists of a book cut up and sewn back together around an embroidery circle. It was created especially for an exhibition at The Gallery of Wonder (Newcastle University) in the UK. I think it’s a very impressive piece and the story behind it shows Yvette’s deep interest also in the history of book and paper arts. She explains that “Traditionally women only folded and sewed pages of books in book binding, they were not allowed to make the covers of books, known as ‘casing in’ as it was seen as shameful. These sculptures reflect the work women undertook, using only folding and sewing, an act that mirrored their role in the domestic home. (…) The pages of the book are unreadable in the same way the stitching of the pages or ‘signatures’ would be concealed by the covers that would be made by men.”

‘No Land in Particular’ was Yvette’s third big book installation that she created out of a hundreds of discarded books and with the help of volunteers that helped folding. The installation engages the viewer in the physical acts of looking and reading and it takes on yet another new form as each piece is fixed to the wall creating a large sculptural wall drawing based on the contours of maps. The play between two and three dimensions – flat pages that are formed into drums, a map that is usually two-dimensional now transformed into a three-dimensional landscape just like the real landscapes it depicts but now even crawling over walls – is especially intriguing.

A lot of people and not only book- and paper-lovers would feel quite guilty about taking books apart for their work (everybody here at the PaperPhine studio would feel bad in fact). But Yvette has overcome these feelings as she says in an interview “I used to feel guilty, but after a while I stopped thinking about them as these sacred vessels of knowledge and more like objects or materials for me to explore and manipulate. Whenever I run a workshop there are always initial gasps as I extract the covers, sometimes I forget to warn people beforehand. Of course there are books I can never fold and never will. All of the books I use are second hand or donated by charity shops or libraries, so it’s like giving them a new lease of life and reinvigorating them into something new.”

Yvette is definitely an artists to watch – or perhaps, if you have the space, even an artist to invite to your town for a folding workshop or for some book magic!

Not to mention bookbinders, jewelry makers and everybody who loves to put a special twist on their gift wrappings. The versatility of our paper twines also shows in the publications and blogs that are so kind to mention and feature us.

Paper Lampshades by Studio Snowpuppe

Chestnut Lampshade by Studio Snowpuppe
Chestnut Lampshade by Studio Snowpuppe
Chestnut Lampshade by Studio Snowpuppe (design by Kenneth and Nellianna).

Sometimes I’m wondering what it is that makes the combination of paper and light so fascinating. One guess is that it is the quality of the light once it filters through paper that is so appealing to people – and that’s probably also one of the reason why I have to write about paper and cardboard lamps once in a while on this blog and share my discoveries with you.

Some of my favourite paper lampshades are by the Dutch Studio Snowpuppe (website in Dutch, read more about them and their studio life on their English Tumblr site).

The story behind Studio Snowpuppe’s lampshades reflects my thoughts about the fascination of paper and light. Energy-saving light bulbs have become very popular in Europe (in Austria they’re the only kind of light bulb still sold) but the problem is that the light they give is just not very nice and quite cold so it’s not a light you want in your living environment. Once the light filters through paper it changes and becomes cosy and nice to live with especially in the light-deprived winter months in Middle and Northern Europe. This was the starting point for Nellianna and Kenneth, the two designers behind Studio Snowpuppe who experimented with paper diamond shapes and developped the origami paper lampshades.

The Chestnut lampshade was really inspired by Chestnuts and has a cornered outside and a curved inside that you would not expect when looking at its outside. Studio Snowpuppe compares it to the first time you open a chestnut and see that it is very round and curved on the inside. The Chestnut and the Moth lampshades are also available on etsy in a lot of colors.

The Signature lampshade is folded out of three huge pieces of parchment paper. It arrives folded in a tube-like shape and “falls” into the ball shape by itself. You can see the video and buy this lampshade here (in Dutch but the pictures are self-explanatory and beautiful).
