Sometimes we’re sorting through a box of old bobbins straight from a mill and find bobbins unlike any we’ve ever seen before – unique, beautiful, with lots of history and flair. And that’s a hard thing to say because all of our bobbins are beautiful, with lots of history and flair but some have a really rare design that makes them even more precious. Of course it’s not said that there are not more of these seemingly rare bobbins hidden away somewhere but after a couple of years in this business you get to know a lot of designs and old manufacturer’s marks.
In these moments with exciting finds under grease and dirt it gets very difficult sometimes not to hide these treasures away and to keep them. In fact the whole team is suffering from a bit of collector’s syndrome and only a lack of space keeps us from hoarding old industrial implements, tools, etc. Even though we buy these bobbins specifically to put our paper yarns and paper twines onto them and sell them again I can tell you that it’s sometimes really hard to send them out again even with the knowledge that our customers share our love for these artifacts of textile history.
I do not even want to imagine how difficult it must be for sellers of a diverse range of vintage goods to let go of their product – while we have “only” bobbins to let go they have whole furnishing houses of beautiful, old goods to say good-bye to… It’s the bobbins you see here that prompted this little blog article – after having them on the desk for a year and a half it seems finally time to let go of them and send them out to a new owner. Please treat them well.
For all of you who have BIG projects in mind: our strong colored paper twines are now also available in small skeins ranging from 70 – 220 meters (about 77 – 240 yards).
These skeins give you enough material for knitting and crocheting bags and baskets, for a lot of gift-wrapping and jewelry-making, bookbinding and scrapbooking etc. Let us know you idea what to do with these skeins, too – we love to hear from you!
Paper Twine Skeins in various colors are available in our shop and in our Etsy shop
We’re getting into the right mood for the holidays – and thanks to Linda’s Mum we now even have a Christmas Tree made of some of our own >Vintage Bobbins! A combination of old silk bobbins wrapped with twine and yarns as well as some smaller Christmas tree ornaments make a beautiful, small tree (that can be stored away in a small box if we wanted to because the bobbins are only stacked and not glued together).
It’s getting festive in the studio. We can’t put up a whole tree because there is no space for it but we decorated two corkscrew-hazelnut tree branches with paper circles made of our red-white striped paper cord and now we’re feeling ready for the holidays. The good news is that these circles are really easy and fast to make looking beautiful in front of windows and strung up as garlands as well. And we do not even have to redecorate for the New Year’s party because the red and white goes well with about everything.
SUPPLIES and TOOLS:
Red-White Striped Paper Cord: 26 in (65cm) for ten circles
Medium White Paper Twine to string your paper disks or comparable twine
Some drops of glue
Optional: Bulldog clips or paper clips
For one circle cut one piece of paper cord (2.6 in / 6,5cm long) and untwist completly. Flatten the piece of crinkly paper you get and fold in half to determine the middle. Fold the paper into small folds/crinkles in the middle (looks like a bow). Take the two sides into your hands and twist by 180° (this is step 5).
Put a little bit of glue onto the edges of the “bow” and put edges together so that a full circle is formed. Bulldog/Paper clips are handy to keep the circle closed while the glue is drying.
Once the glue is dry cut any small corners or edges to make the circle round and punch a small hole into it. Thread a piece of medium white paper twine through the hole, make one tiny knot and la-voilà, your first striped paper circle is finished!
Obviously there is no snow in Vienna yet but the last days of snow-free autumn are supposed to be over soon and the look out of our window will change. We’re holiday-ready and look forward to all that is to come.
Circle-making is quite addictive. So it might be good to know that with one hank of the red-white striped paper cord you can make a stunning 384 small circles!
The latest addition to our range of paper twines: a bulky, striped paper cord in red and white that is perfect for gift wrappings, bows and garlands – just in time for the holiday season!
The cord has a naturally crinkled texture and can be untwisted to a stunning 4 1/2 inch (11cm) wide heavy creped ribbon. The ribbon has a great body and can be easily formed into bows that will maintain their shape nicely.
Comes as a hank with 25 yards (about 22,8m) – and in case there is some of this gorgeous paper cord left after the Christmas holidays you’ll also love it to decorate garden parties, children’s birthday parties (think about those bows and garlands!) and to use for gift wrapping the whole year round!
Now availabe in the PaperPhine etsy store.
KNOT can be worn as a necklace as well as a bracelet
We introduced out new KNOT jewelry line in August this year (here and here) and it has become a huge success. In fact we sold so many that our supplier ran out of the beautiful, matte latches we used to add even more options in the style you can wear the necklace/bracelet. But now the latches are back in stock and because they were made especially for us in Germany we now do have a lot of them in the studio!
If you’re looking for a Christmas present for one of your loved ones (or for yourself) then this versatile piece might be what you’ve been looking for. KNOT jewelry is made of paper twine and it can get wet though to keep the pieces in pristine condition we recommend to take them off before washing the dishes or going for a romantic walk in the rain! All pieces are packed in clear gift-boxes and if you need them wrapped as gift just drop us a line and we’ll whip up a fantastic, papery gift for you. Buy it online in our etsy shop.
Also we’ve been working with our Nordic agent Stjernestunder and there are now a lot of shops in Denmark and Norway that are selling our KNOTs – you can find a complete list of our stockists here (please note that not all PaperPhine retailers have the KNOTs).
In summer we showed you one of our knitted paper twine tote bags (with DIY instructions) so it was about time to also share a crocheted tote bag with you! The subscribers of our newsletter have already seen this model. By now we can add that even after extended daily use for half a year and the transport of moist produce the bag is still in excellent condition!
By now we know the secrets of bag-making but in the beginning is was difficult to start from scratch so we looked for available patterns and models around the internet. The pattern for the white crochet bag shown here was found on the highly-recommended Purl Bee blog.
We used strong white paper twine for the bag and added a colorful rim with one row each of turquoise, fresh green and yellow single crochet stitches
You can now also find whole skeins of colored paper twine suitable for this bag in our online shop and in our Etsy shop
Crochet hook used: 2.75mm / US C / UK 11
The bag is simple to make, just keep in mind that you’ll need more strength to crochet the paper twine than usual cotton/linen twine. Therefore rather start slowly and spread crocheting the bag over a whole week rather than doing it on one day (your wrists and hands will be thankful).
This bag makes a great Christmas present as well and you can vary its size by adding to or decreasing the rows of the pattern. Happy crocheting!
Our new postcards arrived! We seriously underestimated the weight of a parcel filled with postcards but luckily our mailman was so nice to carry the parcel right into the studio and put it into the designated spot in the shelf – thanks again! The postcard shows all of your strong paper twines – 19 colors in total – and we’ll start sending them out with all the orders.
